Meine Culinarische Reise durch Münster : Die Bohne - Kaffeerösterei

Are you addicted to coffee? Looking for the best cappuccino in town? Die Bohne is probably the cafe you are looking for.. It's a very small place and primarily in the business of selling coffee beans. However, it also offers a wide selection of coffee, light snack, homemade cakes and smoothies. It's a little tricky to find the cafe, the entrance to the restaurant is quite narrow. It's nearby the wineshop on LudgeriStr. Here is the google map link .
I have to admit that I am not a big fan of coffee of any kind, but based on my personal experience, Die Bohne is a great place for a cup of coffee(especially cappuccino). It reminds me of my 'cappuccino days' in Florence..The only two drawbacks are (a) the cafe is VERY small and probably not suitable for a large group (b) I like the presentation of the cakes more than the actual taste of the cakes. They were not too sweet (Das ist OK für mich), but they were just not moist enough to be considered as great as the coffee! To sum up, if you want to have your 'cappuccino day', this place is an option to visit. Perhaps, you may want to take home some grams of coffee.. [Rating] Coffee - 4 1/2 stars ; Cake - 3 stars

Meine Culinarische Reise durch Münster : Issel Konditorei Cafe

Cafe Issel - an absolute treasure! Luv it ALOT!!! The cafe, located at 42 Hammer Str., has a pleasant seating area inside as well as an outdoor patio with several tables. It offers a selection of cakes, tarts, cookies, handmade chocolates and pralines (to eat in or take away).

Various hand-made dark and milk chocolate bars... Some unique flavours of chocolate: (a) Tomato (perhaps, sweet and tangy?), (b) Nutmeg (c) Rosemary (both are interesting!) (d) Ginger (I prefer ginger snaps to ginger chocolates...), finally (d) Pumpernickel ?!! - very unusual, for me!

The cakes range from classic to innovative...they are SO tempting ^O^...

Yummy pastries - I will give them a try on my next visit ;)

Bicycle-powered delivery service is available...

Here are the slices of cakes we tried (each slice costs 3 euros) :
  • Schokoladen Trüffel Torte or Chocolate Truffle Cake (4 1/2 stars) : A moist layered cake with bittersweet filling, topped with chocolate ganache and decorated with fine chocolate crumbs. Unlike other truffle cakes, it is not overly sweet and not too buttery. A perfect indulgence for the chocoholics! Well, to put it in a nutshell, the slice you should not miss!

  • Schwarzwälder Kirschtorte or Black Forest Cake (3 3/4 stars) : Thin layers of chocolate cake and very thick layers of cream filling, and some cherries between them. A slightly dry bottom layer, but it's no big deal!

  • Champagne Truffle Torte or Champagne Truffle Cake (4 stars) : This is pretty much the same as the chocolate truffle cake but with champagne ganache filling. It has strong alcohol taste (at least for me) ... If you are a boozy cake fan, this is worth a try ;)

Summary : If you have a sweet tooth, then Issel is the perfect place for you :)

Meine Culinarische Reise durch Münster : Prütt Cafe

I am not a strict vegetarian nor a truly carnivore. I wanted to try something a bit different, so I decided to visit the Prütt Cafe with my pescetarian friends. The cafe is ideally situated, just being within a short walking distance from the main station. I found the atmosphere is very nice and cozy. The seating area is divided by a short staircase into two sections. There is a notice board near the main entrance which includes local events/concerts announcements. The cafe is equipped with a mix of simple wooden tables, comfy benches, round dining sets, a magazine rack, etc. The menu is not extensive but sufficient. The cafe serves salads, soups, pizzas, desserts, and small plate dishes like baked potato, falafel, etc. Don't forget to check out the daily specials which are offered in addition to the menu items.

  • [food] I ordered a Sencha, and it was a bit bitter. The pizzas at Prutt are unique in terms of ingredients. I had a small potato pizza with goat cheese, olives and onions. The idea of a pizza with a wholemeal base was quite 'new' for me. I liked the cheese topping; with some crushed tomatoes, the pizza would have tasted better. We shared a ginger brownie - a good balance of flavors, however it was a bit dry and flaky - missing the chewy texture of a brownie..
  • [service]The service was decent. Our reservation was cancelled by mistake and the waitress managed to get a table for us - that was nice ;) It took a while to receive our courses, but the waiting period was tolerable.
  • [price] A small pizza+ sencha + brownie ~ 10.00 EUR
  • [food rating] Potato pizza - 3 1/4 stars ; Brownie - 2 1/2 stars
Remarks : I passed by Prütt Cafe many times and it is always full, so a reservation is a must! I am not so excited with the food, but I am glad that I tried a wholemeal organic pizza - certainly, a new experience for me :) The cafe has nice atmosphere - could be an option just hang around and drink cappuccino!

Meine Culinarische Reise durch Münster : Grotemeyer

A famous hang-out place for middle-aged or elderly, Cafe Grotemeyer is a long-standing, much like a traditional Viennese-style coffee house in Muenster. It was opened in 1850 by Albert and Bertha Grotemeyer. It is VERY spacious, uncluttered. The decors consist of deep red & green turquoise furniture with various portraits on the walls, full length classic style drapes, 'mini' coffee sets arranged on the shelves, magazine racks, etc. The floor is carpeted throughout. The windows are full of colourful marzipan fruits..don't forget to check the marzipan potatoes - they look very authentic!!!
  • [food] The menu was overwhelming - several options of breakfast meals, ice-cream desserts, mouth watering pastries and tortes, different types of coffee and tea, wines, alcohol-free beverages, etc. The cafe also offers different kinds of cookies and chocolates. I ordered a slice of chocolate hazelnut cake and a cup of macadamia flavored cappuccino. The cake was nutty and perfectly sweetened. I wish it was a little more dense...The cappuccino was one of the well-made cappuccinos I have had outside of Italy.
  • [service] The service was very good; the waitresses were friendly and attentive...
  • [price] Cake + Cappuccino = 5.60 EUR.. A reasonable price!
  • [rating] Chocolate hazelnut cake - 3 1/2 stars ; Cappuccino - 4 stars
Cafe Grotemeyer is worth visiting...You might find yourself surrounded by older age groups, but it is a good place to relax and enjoy a coffee in the city... I will go back again to try more torte and chocolates!

Meine Culinarische Reise durch Münster : Cafe Malik

After hearing my friend raved about carrot cake , we eventually made a trip to Cafe Malik, situated opposite to the Schloss. Established in 1983, Cafe Malik is a full service cafe serving breakfast, lunch, dinner and homemade cakes and ice-cream. The cafe was named after an anti-war novel Der Malik-1919 (written by Else Lasker-Schüler - a German Jewish poet and writer) and Malik-Verlag which was a German publishing house started by Wieland Herzfelde & John Heartfield.

  • [food] I started with 'Tortellini Isabella' with mushroom cream sauce. It was simple and dull - not full of vegetable, a little bit flavorless and the sauce was too watery. The carrot cake was the highlight of my meal! It was a moist & dense cake, loaded with grated carrots and walnuts and not overly sweet - luv it :)
  • [atmosphere] The atmosphere is what makes Cafe Malik a pleasant place to visit. It has the ambiance of a traditional coffee house - simple, nice, cozy with a little touch of modernity. It has a separate dining area for smokers. In general, a good option to catch up with friends, to read something or to enjoy a relaxing cup of cappuccino :)
  • [price] affordable! cake + tortellini + cappuccino = 11 euros...
  • [food rating] Carrot Cake - 4 stars ; Tortellini Isabella - 2 1/2 stars
In conclusion, a great place to kill time & to chat with friends..if you can spare the calories, go for the carrot cake!
